UNIVERSIDAD DE LA FRONTERA
The Universidad de La Frontera was founded by Decree with Force of Law No. 17 on March 10, 1981, under Decree-Law 3,451 of 1980. It was established through the merger of the local campuses of the Universidad Técnica del Estado and the Universidad de Chile, which were operating in the city of Temuco at that time. As a Public Law Corporation, the University defines itself within the context of its mission as: “A state-owned and autonomous higher education institution, socially responsible, located in the La Araucanía Region. Its mission is to contribute to the development of the region and the country through the generation and transmission of knowledge, the education of professionals and postgraduates, and the cultivation of the arts and culture. It is committed to quality and innovation, respect for individuals, the environment, and cultural diversity, and the construction of a more just and democratic society.”
The University of La Frontera is the only regional state university located in the La Araucanía Region (Ninth Region). This status affords the institution the opportunity to fully embrace the social responsibility inherent to its nature, establishing itself as the primary benchmark for academic activity within the region.

UNIVERSIDAD AUSTRAL DE CHILE
The Universidad Austral de Chile is a scholarly community composed of faculty and students who, with the contribution of academic support staff and administrative and service personnel, is dedicated to the objectives of higher education. It was founded through Supreme Decree No. 3,757 on September 7, 1954, in Valdivia, following the initiative of prominent local figures led by Dr. Eduardo Morales Miranda. This was in response to the urgent aspiration to establish a university-level higher education institution in the southern and austral regions of the country. The enactment of Law No. 16,848 on June 3, 1968, enshrined its autonomy to establish its own curricula and study programs.
The Universidad Austral de Chile is legally organized as a private non-profit corporation, recognized by the State, and enjoys academic, administrative, and financial autonomy in accordance with the law. This status has been established in its founding statutes since 1955; the most recent amendments were approved by the Corporation’s General Assembly of Members on November 25, 2004, and April 26, 2005. Its primary legal domicile is in the city of Valdivia, notwithstanding the development of its activities in other locations through campuses, satellite centers, or other facilities.
The University adopts as its primary objectives those set forth in Article 4 of its Statutes:
- To advance scientific and humanistic research, and to promote technological progress and artistic creation that contribute to solving the problems and addressing the needs of individuals, society, and the environment;
- To disseminate knowledge through undergraduate and graduate education, as well as other activities leading to the development of professionals and scholars, within a framework of respect for fundamental rights and shared social values;
- To engage with the community through outreach, training, technology transfer, and service programs that contribute to its cultural development and foster the University’s engagement with the productive sector
